Useit generally has very good information on the subject of intranets and intranet software. Recently, they released the results of their Annual intranet survey, in which they also compiled a list of "10 best intranets of 2011". Firstly, the list they compiled is as follows:-

  1. AMP Limited (Australia), a wealth management company
  2. Bennett Jones LLP (Canada), one of Canada's largest law firms
  3. Bouygues Telecom (France), a telecom, mobile, fixed, TV, and Internet communications services company
  4. Credit Suisse AG (Switzerland), a global financial services company
  5. Duke Energy (US), an electrical power holding company
  6. Habitat for Humanity International (US), a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing ministry
  7. Heineken International (The Netherlands), a leading brewer and owner and manager of a portfolio of beer brands
  8. KT (Republic of Korea), an information, communications, and technology company
  9. Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construção, S.A. (Portugal), a leading construction enterprise
  10. Verizon Communications (US), a provider of wired and wireless broadband and communications services to US consumers, as well as of global business networking, data, and managed solutions to enterprises worldwide
The main features of this list are that the average size of organizations who have won hovers at around 40,000 employees, while the smallest company in the list has about a 100 employees. The average size of the intranet team of the winners is 14, which reflects how seriously these companies take their company intranet.

Another important finding in the study was that as many as 60% of the intranets had a mobile optimized interface. In the face of a rising interest around the area of mobility, intranets have not been untouched, and lead to the emergence of "mobile intranets".

Some of the key features of winning intranets were as follows:-

Knowledge sharing. This was a key cornerstone of all intranets, where information in the form of case studies, whitepapers, questions and answers etc was made available to employees so that everyone could leverage existing organizational knowledge without having to develop it from scratch.

Innovation management. Companies managed and encouraged innovation by offering users tools for taking ideas and improvements from conception to completion.

Comments. Intranets used a simple commenting system to encourage users to participate content and interact more with the system.

Ratings. Another simply way to let everyone participate, and in the process let the more valuable content emerge democratically.

Customized collections. Rather than forcing a single information architecture across the organization, intranet managers often let users design and choose the content most relevant to their job tasks.
